La Navidad (Christmas) en estos países incluye la comida tradicional del 25 de diciembre, junto a los famosos regalos que esperan los niños. Y aunque los platos y los juguetes cambian año tras año, las canciones navideñas son una tradición centenaria que ocupa un lugar especial en la cultura inglesa. Tanto en la calle, los locales, o en casa, no vas a escapar de los villancicos.
La música de Navidad es una gran oportunidad para familiarizarte con la cultura inglesa, canadiense o estadounidense; y también para aprender fácilmente vocabulario en inglés.
Cada país tiene sus propios villancicos que nos permiten vivir el espíritu de la Navidad. Origen de los villancicos en inglés
Los villancicos, o christmas carol en inglés, surgieron como una forma de transmitir oralmente la vida cotidiana de la sociedad y sus costumbres. Los historiadores afirmar que este tipo de música nació en Europa central en el siglo XIII y se difundió por todo el continente y luego hacia América en los años siguientes.
Al inicio, la temática de estos cantos no estaba limitada solo a la Navidad, pero poco a poco el concepto de villancico se fue fijando para referirse únicamente a las canciones típicas navideñas.

Las mejores canciones navideñas en inglés
Villancico 1: We wish you a Merry Christmas
¿Quién no escuchó alguna vez esta canción mítica de Navidad? Aparece en todas las series y películas que puedas imaginar. Es un clásico tan reconocido como los mismísimos proverbios ingleses.
Esta canción surgió en el oeste de Inglaterra, fue en el coro de Arthur Warrell que se cantó por primera vez la versión moderna de We wish you a Merry Christmas. Originalmente era conocida como I wish you a Merry Christmas, pero el cambio al pronombre "we" fue el puntapié que la llevó al éxito.

Villancico 2: Jingle Bells
Cuando el músico James Pierpont escribió originalmente esta canción en 1857 no lo pensó como un villancico, y se llamaba One-horse open sleigh. Con las décadas, los coros tradicionales se apropiaron de la melodía y convirtieron a Jingle Bells en una canción para la Holiday Season.
El villancico evoca las campanas que usaban los caballos de Nueva Inglaterra del siglo XIX. El trote continuo de los cascos y el sonido de las campanas en las calles formaban una cierta melodía que James Pierpont trató de reproducir a través del ritmo de la canción.
Este villancico es tan popular que incluso tiene su versión en español: "Dulce Navidad". Además, Jingle Bells fue la primera canción que se emitió desde el espacio en 1965 por los astronautas Tom Stafford y Wally Schirra.

Villancico 3: Jingle Bell Rock
Jingle Bell Rock es de los villancicos más populares en Estados Unidos, lo vas a escuchar frecuentemente en la radio. Fue Bobby Helms quien la cantó por primera vez en 1957, y a la gente le gustó tanto que entró inmediatamente después de su lanzamiento en la lista Billboard de los discos más vendidos.
Desde entonces, distintos artistas - como Laura Pausini, Rascal Flatts o Michael Bublé- reinterpretaron la canción. Pero se volvió mundialmente reconocida entre los millenials y Generación Z después de que apareciera en la película Mean Girls.

Villancico 4: O holy night
O holy night es uno de los villancicos más viejos de la lista: la letra proviene originalmente de un poema en francés titulado Minuit, chrétiens (medianoche, cristianos) que data del siglo XVII. Aunque los británicos no la crearon, sino que tradujeron el poema palabra por palabra, plantaron su bandera y la volvieron propia.
El texto original es sobre todo religioso: la canción evoca el nacimiento de Jesús y la redención de la humanidad. Por ello este villancico sigue siendo popular entre los coros cristianos y se puede escuchar en Nochebuena en las iglesias británicas y estadounidenses.

El villancico tradicional -que data de 1843- y que todos conocemos sufrió varios cambios al adaptarse a los estilos musicales contemporáneos. Algunos incluso modificaron la letra para incluir el slang en inglés propio de la época. Andrea Bocelli hizo una versión de ópera en 2009, Edens Edge una versión de country en 2012 y, más recientemente, el ganador de The Voice US, Tessanne Chin, hizo una versión de reggae.
Por su parte, artistas como Mariah Carey, Céline Dion, Whitney Houston y Donna Summer también interpretaron esta canción.
Villancico 5: All I want for Christmas is you
No podría faltar en esta lista. All I Want for Christmas is You fue lanzada en 1994 en los Estados Unidos y se convirtió de un día para otro en un éxito internacional, un clásico de las fiestas que se escucha 24/7 cuando llega la Holiday Season. Para que lo tengas en números: en 2013 produjo más de 50 millones de dólares en royalties.
Al igual que Jingle Bell Rock, el ritmo es mucho más movido que la música tradicional de Navidad.

Villancico 6: Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer es de las canciones navideñas que más le gusta a los chicos. Este villancico cuenta la historia de Rudolph, el reno de nariz colorada. Los otros ciervos se ríen de Rudolph por ser diferente (claramente no conocen las fórmulas de cortesía en inglés). Pero la vida de Rudolph cambiará cuando Papá Noel lo elige para liderar el trineo que lleva los regalos de Navidad por el mundo.

Esta canción le pertenece al icónico dúo británico de pop Wham!, y fue compuesta por George Michael y Andrew Ridgeley.

Silent Night es la versión en inglés de la tradicional canción navideña "Noche de Paz". Se podría afirmar que es el villancico más famoso del mundo, tanto que incluso fue declarado patrimonio cultural inmaterial por la UNESCO.
